Festival season has arrived and this year, events up and down the country are boasting lineup’s that are bigger than ever.
Of course, the one festival that everybody has their eyes on is Glastonbury Festival. Set in 900 acres of countryside in Somerset, it’s the largest music and performing arts festival in the world and welcomes 200,000 people each year.
Glastonbury Festival also welcomes some of the biggest names in the music industry, with Elton John set to close the Pyramid Stage at this year’s festival with what is expected to be the final UK show of his farewell tour.
Elton John’s style is equally as famous as his hits and over the years, he’s made some eye catching choices – from his Donald Duck costume, to his bedazzled Dodgers kit. You can never be certain what the legendary musician is going to wear, but you CAN be certain that he’ll always pair it with some magnificent jewels.
To celebrate his Glastonbury headline set, fine jewellery experts at Steven Stone have spent some time flicking through the archives to identify some of Elton’s most spectacular pieces of jewellery.
Gold & Diamond Rocket Brooch
Value: £20,000 ($26,000)
When attending the 2020 Golden Globes, Elton was sporting an 18-carat gold and diamond bespoke Rocket brooch from Theo Fennell on the lapel of his tux.
Elton was also seen wearing the brooch at the 28th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Viewing Party in West Hollywood after the 2020 Oscars Awards ended.
The 3cm long brooch features cabochon sapphires and diamonds.
Sapphire & Diamond Clip Brooch
Value: £50,000 ($64,000)
Back in 2008, a 5cm long sapphire and diamond clip brooch that had been previously worn by Elton went up for auction at Bonhams.
Featuring brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds and oval-cut and circular-cut sapphires, it was reportedly created around 1935 – though the designer is unknown.
Elton wore the Art Deco style brooch during the filming of his music video for ‘I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That’ in 1988.
Bondage Ring
Value: £15,000 ($20,000)
Alongside the bespoke Rocket brooch that Elton wore to the 2020 Golden Globes, he was wearing a Bondage ring on his pinky finger from Loree Rodkin.
The ring features old cut diamonds, in a vintage style.
Platinum & Gold Sunglasses
Value: £70,000 ($90,000)
Elton’s sunglasses are a fundamental part of his outfits and he wore some of his most valuable in 1975, when he hosted the first ever Rock Music Awards with Diana Ross.
Reportedly bought from Dennis Roberts Optique Boutique on the Sunset Strip – where both Elton and Elvis frequently shopped – the platinum and 18k gold glasses are set with over 100 diamonds.
Flower Brooch
Value: £70,000 ($90,000)
In February 2013, Elton and his husband David held their 2013 Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party at Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.
Looking smart in a black tux, Elton accesorised with a stunning pink flower brooch.
Reportedly from Chopard, the floral rubellite brooch features pave set pink sapphires, rubies and diamonds.
Yellow Diamond Earring
Value: £150,000 ($192,000)
For the premiere of Elton’s biographical film ‘Rocketman’ at Cannes Film Festival 2019, the musician wore a single yellow vivid drop diamond earring.
From Chopard, the piece features an oval cut yellow diamond in a halo setting. The colour of sunshine, yellow diamonds are an incredibly positive stone.
They’re seen as a sign of friendship, happiness, and hope, which makes Elton’s earring a particularly sentimental choice as he’s likely to have been paying tribute to his friendship with actor Taron Egerton, who portrayed Elton in the film.
Wedding Ring
Value: £20,000 ($26,000)
Elton and David had a civil partnership in 2005, followed by a wedding ceremony on 21st December 2014 – the wedding ceremony took place as soon as same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK.
Elton wears a full diamond set wedding band.
Queen Elizabeth Brooch
Value: £50,000 ($64,000)
In 2012, Elton wore a beautifully crafted Queen Elizabeth Brooch at a concert in New York.
Made by Theo Fennell, the brooch consists of sapphires and diamonds – as well as a central ruby. It’s also decorated with black onyx.
Nameplate Knuckledusters
Value: £70,000 ($90,000)
Elton was as colourful and flamboyant as ever when he arrived at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
Sporting a sequinned Gucci blazer, he accessorised with two nameplate knuckledusters that displayed his name.
The vibrant pieces feature a combination of citrine, rubies and emeralds.
Crucifix Necklace
Value: £30,000 ($38,000)
In 1995, Elton attended a Versace store launch on Bond Street and he was as stylish as ever.
Pairing a full silk pale-blue suit and shirt with blue sunglasses, he accesorised with a blue tourmaline and gold necklace.
