Everything you need to know about Self Esteem’s 97% brooch

Self Esteem has come to the end of her biggest tour yet and she delivered a live show that people will be talking about for years.

Despite not having a huge budget, the talented singer-songwriter (real name: Rebecca Lucy Taylor) succeeded in bringing a huge scale production to a small stage and her creativity was reflected in her choreography, lighting and outfit changes.

One outfit change in particular that caught our eye was her slick black suit, which the artist accesorised with an eye catching brooch that was incredibly familiar.

Fine jewellery experts at Steven Stone have taken a close look at the brooch, revealing everything you need to know.

Self Esteem’s latest tour isn’t the first time that she’s worn the brooch – she debuted it on the red carpet for the 2022 Mercury Prize Awards late last year, where she was nominated for her critically acclaimed second album, ‘Prioritise Pleasure’.

Turning heads in a show-stopping outfit that consisted of a chic blazer dress with a white collared-shirt underneath, there was much deeper meaning behind her chosen accessory than just an edgy fashion decision.

Made by Hannah Humpston, a Penzance based jeweller who is dedicated to creating unique statement pieces using sustainable materials, the silver brooch is crafted in the shape of ‘97%’ – a number which holds an incredibly poignant meaning.

When asked about the brooch by The Mirror, Self Esteem told the newspaper that she felt compelled to wear the piece of jewellery for ‘all the women of the UK’ because it represents the number of women who have experienced sexual assault or harassment.

The statistic refers to a YouGov questionnaire, which was carried out by UN Women UK in 2021, who found that 97% of women aged 18-24 said they had been subjected to sexual harassment.

It may come as a surprise to learn that although silver is of course a precious metal, it’s vastly less expensive than gold. With this in mind, our experts estimate that a brooch like Self Esteem’s could be worth up to around £5,000.
