This week marks what would have been the birthday of Marilyn Monroe – legendary American actress, model, comedienne, and singer.
One of the most iconic and successful actresses of her era, Monroe received widespread acclaim for her performances in films such as ‘Some Like It Hot’.
Despite famously performing ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend’ in the 1953 classic ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, her personal jewellery collection was largely made up of costume pieces.
In honour of what would have been her 99th birthday, fine jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have taken a closer look at the most dazzling diamond Marilyn ever wore during her lifetime.

“The most significant piece of jewellery Marilyn Monroe ever wore was the illustrious ‘Moon of Baroda’ – a 24.04-carat, pear-shaped, fancy yellow diamond. Loaned to her in 1953 for the promotional tour of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the stunning necklace added an extra touch of glamour to her already dazzling image.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, the historic diamond originated in India’s legendary Golconda mines and was originally cut into its antique pear shape to adorn the traditional pagri headdress worn by Indian royalty.
Given its extraordinary provenance and association with one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars, the Moon of Baroda is considered priceless. However, in 2018, it was sold at Christie’s for approximately $1.5 million – a modest sum for a gem of such historical and cultural significance.”
