Princess Margaret’s royal wedding to Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960 produced one of the most exquisite engagement rings in the Royal Family – a stunning ruby surrounded by diamonds, said to be designed in the shape of a rosebud.
But where is the ruby sparkler now? Princess Margaret’s granddaughter, Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, revealed that her father gifted her the treasured ring on her 21st birthday. She now wears it for occasions she believes her grandmother would have cherished being part of – including King Charles’s coronation in 2023.
Jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have shared everything known about the remarkable ring, though, sadly, only a few photographs of the piece exist today.
“Reflecting her distinctive and unconventional spirit, the ring features a deep red ruby surrounded by a halo of round-cut diamonds, arranged to resemble a rosebud. Custom-designed by Armstrong-Jones himself – who was a professional photographer and had a keen eye for design – this was a deeply personal design choice – “Margaret Rose” was the Princess’s full name, and the ring was intended as a romantic nod to that.
Cradled in yellow gold, the ruby rests on a band of the same hue – a regal emblem of commitment and a nod to the storied tradition of royal jewels.
While few reliable valuations exist for this exceptional piece, the available estimates seem notably conservative. Based on its design, provenance, and craftsmanship, I would value the ring at approximately $100,000.”
