The Princess of Wales returned to public duties today for the ceremonial welcome of the Qatari state visit at Horse Guards Parade. The Emir of Qatar and his wife are in the UK for a two-day visit.
Kate wore a long, fitted maroon coat dress paired with a matching hat. Known for using her outfits and accessories to pay tribute, it’s likely that her colour choice was a subtle nod to the Qatari flag.
As always, it was Kate’s jewellery that stole the spotlight, with the Princess wearing a very special necklace that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II.
Fine jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have uncovered all the details about the remarkable piece.

“Making her return to public duties, the Princess of Wales wore a stunning pearl choker crafted from a collection of cultured pearls that were gifted to Queen Elizabeth II by the Japanese government. Grown in carefully selected environments, these cultured pearls offer the same lustre and hardness as natural pearls, though they are less rare, which is reflected in their price.
The piece was a part of Queen Elizabeth II’s regular jewellery collection throughout the 1980s and 90s, and it was also worn by the late Princess Diana at a state banquet in the Netherlands. Given its history, the necklace holds significant sentimental value for Kate, who also wore it at both Prince Philip’s and Queen Elizabeth II’s funerals.
I’d estimate the necklace to be worth around $26,300 (£23,000).”
