Today, 9th January 2025, Kate Middleton marks her 43rd birthday, with social media overflowing with heartfelt well-wishes for the beloved royal.
Over the years, the Princess of Wales has had some truly unforgettable jewelry moments – from her 12-carat Ceylon sapphire engagement ring to her Collingwood diamond and pearl earrings, both of which once belonged to Princess Diana.
However, it’s the tiaras that truly captivate fans, and we can’t blame them. These royal pieces are renowned for being some of the most exquisite and valuable jewelry in the world.
In honour of Kate’s birthday, luxury jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have explored the history and sentimental significance of the iconic tiara she wore on her wedding day.
The dazzling tiara Kate Middleton chose to wear on 29th April 2011 has since become one of the most iconic royal wedding tiaras of all time. Known as the Cartier Halo tiara, it features 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds, and was graciously lent to Kate by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Kate was far from the first royal to wear it. Due to its smaller-than-average size, it was often considered a perfect “beginner” tiara for younger family members. Princess Margaret was the first to borrow the Cartier Halo tiara, and it quickly became one of her favorite pieces in her younger years. Princess Anne also wore the tiara, with her last public appearance in it dating back to the 1970s. Queen Elizabeth II only wore the tiara once, shortly after she received it. Though she never wore it in public.
The Cartier Halo tiara dates back to 1936, originally crafted as a gift from King George VI to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. He commissioned Cartier to create something magnificent using diamonds and platinum he had personally acquired.
