Earlier this week, as Patron of Save the Children UK, Princess Anne attended the 30th Anniversary International Financial Review Annual Awards Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
Known for her timeless style, Princess Anne chose a green and white paisley-printed shift dress with a collared neckline – an outfit she has worn for decades. She previously donned the striking print at a dinner event at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in support of Leuchie House.
The Princess Royal is also known for re-wearing her jewellery, and on this occasion, she showcased a particularly historic choker.
Fine jewellery experts from UK retailer Steven Stone have analysed the piece, revealing that the brooch dates back to the 1890s, and offering a fascinating glimpse into its rich history.
“Princess Anne’s sapphire choker is a striking piece, featuring four rows of pearls interspersed with 20 diamond bars, all centered around an angular sapphire and diamond clasp.
Like many royal jewels, the choker carries a rich history. Originally belonging to Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, who was photographed wearing it in the 1890s, the piece was later acquired by Queen Mary, who frequently wore it throughout the 1930s.
Following Queen Mary’s passing in 1953, the choker was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II. As she rarely wore chokers, she gifted it to Princess Anne in the early 1970s. Since then, the Princess Royal has reserved it for special occasions, including her 50th birthday and Prince William’s wedding gala in 2011.
I’d estimate the choker’s value to be approximately £200,000.”
