Sophie Wessex’s £80k ring that people mistake for Meghan Markle’s

Sophie Wessex is known for her minimalistic and elegant fashion sense, often opting for classic, understated styles that exude grace and sophistication. This refined approach extends to her jewellery choices, where she favours delicate, timeless pieces that compliment her refined aesthetic without overwhelming her look.

To celebrate the Duchess of Edinburgh’s birthday, fine jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have drawn their attention to a stunning piece of jewellery that has sparked much intrigue and confusion over the years – her aquamarine ring.

“Sophie Wessex’s aquamarine cocktail ring has long been a subject of fascination and occasional confusion, largely due to its striking resemblance to one worn by Meghan Markle – a piece that originally belonged to Princess Diana.

Aquamarines and other light blue gemstones have become signature elements of the Duchess of Edinburgh’s jewellery collection, with one of her most memorable appearances being at Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s wedding in 2013. On that occasion, she stunned in a £1 million tiara featuring five captivating aquamarines. The ring in question, believed to be from Collins and Sons, boasts a remarkable 20-carat aquamarine. Set in platinum, the stone appears to be a cushion-cut stone. I’d estimate its value to be around £80,000.

Meghan’s ring, which was given to her by Prince Harry for their wedding reception, features a huge emerald-cut aquamarine, flanked by two small solitaire diamonds. Set in 24-carat yellow gold, the ring was only worn by the late Princess of Wales on two occasions before her tragic passing. While it’s no doubt priceless, if it were available to buy, it would be worth around £85,000 – closely mirroring the value of Sophie’s exquisite piece.”

Everything we know about Meghan’s aquamarine ring

Featuring an emerald cut aquamarine flanked by small solitaire diamonds, the eye-catching aquamarine was given to Princess Diana by her friend, Lucia Flecha de Lima, and created into a ring by Asprey in 1996.

While many people claim the aquamarine ring was commissioned as a replacement for Diana’s sapphire engagement ring after her divorce in 1997, it was only worn on two occasions before her tragic death.

The first appearance of the ring came when Diana, attended the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Fund raising Dinner in Sydney, in October 1996, a few months after the couple’s divorce. She paired the ring with a coordinating pearl bracelet, featuring a huge aquamarine clasp.

The ring, set on a 24 carat yellow gold band, was passed down to Prince Harry who gave it to Meghan Markle to wear for the couple’s wedding reception.

While the ring is no doubt priceless, if it were available to buy, it would be worth around £75,000 to £85,000.
