Queen Maxima has been a royal since 2002, when she married King Willem-Alexander, who became King of the Netherlands after his mother, Beatrix, abdicated in April 2013 after 33 years as reigning monarch.
The couple announced their engagement during a live televised broadcast in The Hauge on 30th March 2001, where Maxima addressed the nation in Dutch.
Despite being born in Argentina, she won the hearts of the nation with her symbolic engagement ring, which references the House of Orange-Nassau – the name of the Dutch royal dynasty.
Though did you know that the royal has another piece of jewellery that she wears almost every day? To celebrate Queen Maxima’s birthday on 17th May 2023, fine jewellery experts at Steven Stone have taken a close look at the piece, which she’s been wearing since 2011.
Most days, Queen Maxima accessorises with a yellow gold chain bracelet that’s adorned with coloured cabochon gemstones, in a rubber set style – the Queen received the bracelet from her husband, King Willem-Alexander and their three daughters for her 40th birthday.
The coloured gemstones refer to the months of birth of her family members, including crystal for King Willem-Alexander and blue topaz for the royal couple’s eldest child and the heir to the throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia.
Adding even more sentimentality to the piece, the corresponding names are engraved under each stone.
