Royal’s know a great deal about style, and their engagement rings are no exception.
Here at Steven Stone, while we know everything there is to know about the British royal family engagement rings, we don’t know quite as much about some of the other incredible royal rings around the world.
We’ve taken a close look at Princess Sofia’s engagement ring, revealing everything there is to know – from its design, to how it broke royal tradition.
The Ring
In 2014, Prince Carl Phillip proposed to model Sofia Hellqvist with a round diamond surrounded by a ring of smaller diamonds set on a pavé band. Following their wedding, Princess Sofia now pairs the engagement ring with a diamond-encrusted wedding band.
Traditionally, in Sweden they do not exchange elegant engagement rings; instead, they frequently trade modest gold bands during the engagement, keeping the more glitzy ring for the bride on the wedding day.
Sofia’s opulent engagement ring is set on a double-diamond band and has a brilliant centre diamond surrounded by a halo of lesser diamonds.
According to reports, Prince Carl Philip worked on the design with court jeweller W.A. Bolin, which is remarkable given how simple and common the design is. The same high-end jewellery company also created a ring for Princess Victoria (Philip’s sister).
Sofia wore her engagement ring and a pair of bracelets for her first appearance at Sweden’s parliament’s annual opening session, the Riksdag.
On 13th June 2015, Prince Carl Philip married Sofia Hellqvist in a beautiful ceremony at the royal church in Stockholm, with horse-drawn carriages and exquisite royal guests. However, instead of presents, they asked that well-wishers make a charity donation to the Prince Couple’s Foundation. The foundation was esta
blished specifically for the wedding to promote and support care and education. She, like most members of the royal family, donates to a variety of charities. She even co-founded Project Playground in 2010, which strives to help underprivileged children in Africa.
The Controversy
Sofia was a controversial royal bride since she was formerly famous as a model and reality TV personality. However, since becoming a princess, she has volunteered for various organisations and causes, and she is now one of the country’s most famous royals.
Six years later, their marriage is stronger than ever, thanks to their third child, Prince Julian, to the family. He will be joined by the couple’s two older boys, Prince Alexander, five, and Prince Gabriel, three. Princess Sofia has been a delightfully out-of-the-box addition to Sweden’s royal family. Her one-of-a-kind ring glimmers with an awe-inspiring series of diamonds and is best described as having spectacular brilliance.
