If the ladies of the royal family are known for anything, it’s tiaras – and it’s no surprise, as they are known for being among the most expensive pieces of jewellery in the world.
One of the most breathtaking tiaras is the one that Zara Phillips – the daughter of the Princess Royal – wore when she married Mike Tindall on 30th July 2011.
To celebrate Zara’s birthday on 15th May 2023, fine jewellery and diamond experts at Steven Stone have turned their attention to her heirloom tiara.
Zara and Mike’s wedding took place at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh. She was accompanied by her father, Captain Mark Phillips, as she arrived for the ceremony.
Beneath her tulle veil, Zara wore pieces of antique royal jewellery loaned to her by her mother, Princess Anne. She secured her veil with Princess Andrew’s Meander Bandeau – a diamond tiara that originally belonged to her great-grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg.
The sleek, classic diamond bandeau features neoclassical motifs like meander designs, anthemions, and a central laurel wreath element. The design suggests an early twentieth century creation. The earliest photos of Princess Alice wearing the piece were taken around 1914.
Princess Alice gave the tiara to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 1947 and the late monarch passed it on to her only daughter, Princess Anne.
“When it comes to Zara Tindall’s jewellery, it’s usually her solitaire diamond engagement ring that we’re talking about. To celebrate her birthday, we’ve turned our attention to the heirloom tiara that she wore on her big day back in 2011.
Made of diamonds, the tiaras Greek key design is punctuated by a central laurel wreath element and two honeysuckle elements. The design suggests an early twentieth century creation, with the earliest photos of Princess Alice wearing the tiara having been taken around 1914.
It’s a particularly sentimental piece as Princess Alice gave it to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 1947, who later passed it on to Zara’s Mother, Princess Anne.
I’d estimate the striking piece to be worth £280,000 ($350,000).”
