Written and directed by Richard Curtis, ‘Love Actually’ was released in 2003 and has become a cherished seasonal tradition for audiences worldwide.
Capturing the spirit of the holidays, the cinematic gem is currently back in cinemas across the UK to commemorate its 20 year anniversary. Here at Steven Stone, we consider ‘Love Actually’ to be the quintessential holiday film, so we were keen to hop onboard the celebrations.
As a luxury jewellers, we’ve always been enamoured by the iconic necklace that becomes a focal point in one of the film’s most emotionally charged scenes. So much so that we’ve taken inspiration from the poignant piece and created a necklace of our own.
In ‘Love Actually’, we’re introduced to the heart-shaped necklace when Alan Rickman’s character, Harry purchases the delicate and elegant piece from a jewellery store. His wife, Karen – played by Emma Thomson – later finds the piece in his coat pocket and assumes that it’s her Christmas gift from him.
In what ‘Love Actually’ fans agree is the most stand out moment from the film, Karen discovers that Harry is cheating on her when she unwraps a CD from her husband instead of the extravagant necklace that she found in his coat pocket. Karen breaks down in the couples bedroom as she realises that Harry bought the necklace for another woman, before she freshens up and rejoins her family.
We later see the necklace worn by Harry’s secretary – played by Heike Makatsch – who he’s having an affair with. Encapsulating both the beauty of love and the silent struggles within relationships, the necklace features a heart pendant that’s attached to what appears to be a sterling silver or white gold chain.
