The Prince and Princess of Wales have shared a heartfelt three-minute video announcing the joyful news that Kate has completed her chemotherapy.
Reportedly filmed in Norfolk last month, the touching footage captures Kate and her family enjoying the outdoors and cherishing time together.
Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice the absence of Kate’s iconic diamond and sapphire engagement ring, replaced by a different one. But is this new ring truly new, or have we seen it before?
Jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have done some research…
What do we know about the ring?
The now Prince and Princess of Wales began dating in 2001 while studying at the University of St Andrews. Early in their relationship, William presented Kate with a promise ring, which she proudly wore on her middle finger.
The ring, set on a rose gold Victorian band, holds special meaning with its two garnets symbolising Kate’s January birthstone, and pearls representing William’s June birthstone. This thoughtful combination not only reflects their bond but also adds a personal touch to the already meaningful piece.
The symbolism of the ring
Garnets which represent Kate’s birthstone, symbolise perseverance and strength and are traditionally known as commitment stones, which reinforces the meaning behind the ring. Garnets are crystals of passion which amplifies the love in their relationship. They are also thought to be one of the oldest crystals used for spiritual protection throughout history, which could imply Prince William’s desire to protect Kate.
Pearls on the other hand – the birthstone of those born in June – have long been associated with purity, humility and innocence, which amplifies their youth. Pearls were also traditionally given as a wedding gift, which could hint that wedding bells were soon to be on the way.
Have we seen Kate wear the ring before?
Kate wore the ring on her graduation day in 2005 – a milestone not only marking her academic achievements but also symbolising the beginning of a new chapter in her life with Prince William.
While she rarely wears the ring in public, she was seen wearing it on a few occasions in 2013 – once at an event for Action on Addiction and again during her appearance at the Great Tower Scout Camp.
Most recently, Kate was spotted wearing the ring in a congratulatory message to Team GB, shared on her and William’s Instagram following the Paris Olympics
