Queen Camilla adorns a brooch hidden since the 1930s

This year, King Charles and Queen Camilla attended all five days of Royal Ascot.

Her Majesty’s jewellery choices drew particular attention – from a brooch once worn by Queen Elizabeth II to mark her Golden Wedding Anniversary, to a piece set with a diamond from her Coronation Crown.

On the final day, Queen Camilla looked effortlessly elegant in an all-white ensemble, complete with a wide-brimmed hat featuring monochrome accents. She accessorised with a remarkable brooch that hadn’t been seen in public since it was worn by the Queen Mother in 1936, having remained hidden in the royal vault for nearly nine decades.

Diamond experts at UK jeweller Steven Stone have shared insights into the brooch’s rich history and intricate design.

“Queen Camilla’s most unexpected jewellery moment this week came with the debut of the Rothschild brooch – a dazzling royal heirloom not seen in nearly a century. Originally gifted to the future Queen Mary as a wedding present in the summer of 1893, the brooch later graced the Queen Mother during her time as the Duchess of York. Remarkably, it was last worn in 1936 and has remained out of the public eye ever since.

The exquisite piece is designed in two parts: the upper portion features a diamond-set triple-loop bow centred around a prominent solitaire stone. Hanging from it is a short, delicate diamond chain that leads to a circular floral pendant, fully encrusted in brilliant diamonds.

I’d estimate the brooch to be worth around £80,000.”
