The 2024 awards season kicked off last night with the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
The Golden Globes awards the creators of television and film, with ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Succession’ coming out triumphant as two of the biggest winners of the evening.
This year’s show also introduced a brand-new award, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which went to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
While the recognition and appreciation that comes with winning a Golden Globe is no doubt invaluable, the cost of an actual Golden Globe statuette is easy to calculate.
Taking a close look at the Golden Globe statues, goldsmiths and jewellery experts at Steven Stone have revealed exactly how much they cost to make in 2024.
How much does a Golden Globe cost to make?
According to MarkerWatch, the statuettes awarded at the Golden Globes are created at a small factory in Oklahoma, where the six artisans who make up Society Awards work with high-tech machines to create each one. The artisans are college-educated and many have electronic engineering degrees that enable them to work with sophisticated machinery.
Despite being covered in 24 karat gold, the statues aren’t actually made from solid gold and are made from a combination of brass, zinc and bronze. In the past, the base of the statuette had been made of marble, but the newer editions of the statue are gold-plated.
The statuettes are dense, clocking in at 7.8 pounds and reaching 11.5 inches in height. The top of the statuette features a globe with a film strip wrapped around it.
Our experts estimate a single statuette to cost approximately $2,000 to produce, which accounts for the level of skill of the people who create them and also the materials used.
In 2022, our experts estimated the cost of an Oscar to be no more than $1,000 – making a Golden Globe double the cost to produce.
The history of the Golden Globes
The Golden Globe Awards are accolades bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association starting in January 1944, recognizing excellence in both American and international film and television. There are 105 members of the HFPA.
The Golden Globes give out awards in 25 categories plus the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Though according to MarketWatch, the Society Awards produce 100 statuettes for each show – the extras are likely to account for multiple people winning in each category or ties.
Can you sell your Golden Globe?
Actors and other film industry professionals are able to sell their Golden Globes – something that’s different from Oscars, which are prohibited from resale by the Academy. Oscar statuettes must first be offered back to the Academy for the sum of $10.
Maron Brando: At an auction conducted by Heritage Auctions in 2013, Marlon Brando’s 1955 Golden Globe for his performance in the film ‘On the Waterfront’ sold for $68,500.
Burt Reynolds: In 2014, Burt Reynolds famously put 600 items up for auction, including the first Golden Globe he received in 1992 for his role on the television show ‘Evening Shade’ and a second award won for his performance in Boogie Nights in 1998.
Natalie Wood: During a 2015 auction held by Bonhams, Natalie Wood’s Golden Globe for her role in ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ was auctioned off by her husband and daughters – it sold out $17,500. Her Golden Globe for ‘From Here to Eternity’ also fetched $17,500 at the same auction.
Who has the most Golden Globe wins?
Meryl Streep is the Golden Globes’ most decorated actor – the Hollywood legend has picked up eight awards and a staggering 32 nominations in acting categories during her career that’s lasted for nearly half a century. Her most recent win was for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in ‘The Iron Lady’ in 2011.
Barbra Streisand and Tom Hanks also have eight awards. Barbra has been nominated 18 times, while Tom has been nominated 16 times. In 2020, Tom was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role as Mr. Rogers in the film ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ and won the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Paul Newman and Jane Fonda each have 7 awards. Nominated 16 times, Paul’s first win was in 1957, where he came on the scene to snag Best New Actor for his role in the film ‘The Silver Chalice’. Jane’s performance in the 1960 movie ‘Tall Story’ gained her her first Golden Globe for New Star of the Year and she’s been nominated 15 times since – two of her wins were Henrietta Awards.
Can you attend the Golden Globe’s?
Unfortunately, buying tickets to the Golden Globes is impossible as the show is by invitation only, so unless you star in a film or TV series destined to be nominated, then it is unlikely you’d be able to attend the actual ceremony.
