Pearls are among the world’s oldest and most cherished gems, prized for their beauty and rarity since their discovery.

Over time, a select few pearls have risen above the rest, becoming legendary for their extraordinary qualities. Some of these famous pearls date back thousands of years and continue to captivate admirers today, serving as remarkable reminders of the rich history of pearls.

Jewellery experts at Steven Stone have revealed some of the most iconic pearls known to date, highlighting their significance in the timeless story of these precious gems.

The Imperial Hong Kong Pearl

The Imperial Hong Kong Pearl is one of the largest natural South Sea pearls ever discovered.

Measuring an impressive 26 by 39 mm and weighing 127.5 carats (equivalent to 25.5 grams), this remarkable gem is believed to have once belonged to Chinese royalty. Its name comes from its acquisition by the Imperial in Hong Kong during the 1940s.

Formed within a Pinctada maxima oyster, this natural South Sea pearl stands out as a truly exceptional gem. The pearl has been set in a stunning platinum and diamond pendant, adorned with a delicate platinum leaf.

The Hope Pearl

The Hope Pearl is widely regarded as one of the largest and most famous natural pearls in the world.

Discovered off the coast of the West Indies in the early 17th century, this extraordinary gem weighs 126 carats and features an irregular pear shape.

The pearl is elegantly set in a pendant adorned with a crown-shaped setting, embellished with diamonds and other precious gemstones, making it a truly iconic piece.

The Big Pink Pearl

The Big Pink Pearl, discovered in California in 1990, earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for its remarkable size.

Weighing an impressive 470 carats, the pearl was valued at $4.7 million in 1991. Its distinctive shape classifies it as a baroque abalone pearl, adding to its unique allure and extraordinary value.

The Abernathy Pearl
