2024 has been a huge year for celebrity engagements. Some of the world’s biggest stars showcased their extravagant – and in certain cases, truly unique – rings, leaving fans in awe as they caught a glimpse of their breathtaking sparklers.
From Lady Gaga and Emma Roberts, to Carly Rae Jepsen and Selena Gomez, we’ve tallied up 26 celebrity engagements from the UK and US.
To find out more about this year’s celebrity engagement rings, jewellery experts at Steven Stone have meticulously analysed every detail of each ring – from the stone, shape, and setting to the cost, carat, and even the date of the proposals.
As a result, we can officially reveal the biggest engagement ring trends of 2024.
Diamonds are still a girl’s best friend
While precious gemstones such as sapphires and emeralds are becoming increasingly popular for engagement rings, 2024 has seen diamonds reign once more, with a staggering 80% of celebrities showing off classic sparklers.
Emma Roberts received a 3.5 carat round-cut diamond from Cody John, while Kaley Cuoco impressed us all with a 6 carat cushion cut diamond from Tom Pelphrey.
This year, the celebrity world saw a growing demand for coloured diamonds. The 1975 frontman Matt Healy proposed to Gabbriette Bechtel with a breathtaking 5 carat black cushion cut diamond, while Gordon Ramsay’s daughter, Holly, was gifted a stunning 2 carat fancy light yellow diamond by Adam Peaty. Meanwhile, ‘Bake Off’ star Ruby Bhogal received a striking 4 carat aquamarine from BBC presenter James Stewart.
Solitaire remains to be the most popular setting
This year, celebrities are once again embracing more traditional styles, with solitaire settings emerging as the most popular choice overall.
This popular style refers to jewellery set with a single diamond. It’s simple, fuss-free, and allows the gemstone or diamond to truly shine.
57% of celebrities received rings set in a solitaire setting, including Amy Jackson, who wowed us with her oval-cut diamond engagement ring from Ed Westwick in March, after the actor popped the question in Gstaad, Switzerland.
Does size really matter?
Our jewellery experts carefully analysed every engagement ring in our study, revealing that the average celebrity ring weighs in at 4 carats. To put this into perspective, the average engagement ring in the UK is just 1 carat – highlighting how celebrities are truly splurging on their stones.
The title for the biggest bling goes to Lady Gaga – the superstar is currently flaunting a stunning 15 carat oval cut diamond ring from Michael Polansky.
Some celebrities opted for more modest rings, including Sanam Harrinan, who sports a 1 carat round cut diamond engagement ring, and Emilia Smith, who received a 1 carat marquise-cut diamond from Lucy Spraggan.
Money makes the world go round…
Not only did our experts analyse the carats of each ring, but they also closely examined their valuations. After appraising all of this year’s celebrity pieces, which total a staggering £3,386,000, we can conclude that the average cost of an A-list engagement ring in 2024 is £130,230.
Valued at an astonishing £993,000, it’s no surprise that Lady Gaga’s 15 carat sparkler is the most valuable engagement ring of 2024.
You better shape up
Oval cuts continue to dominate as the most popular shape of the year. From our study, 38% of celebrities chose oval cut engagement rings.
2024 has witnessed a rise in popularity for cushion cut engagement rings, with 19% of celebrities choosing the distinctive shape.
11% of celebrities were captivated by marquise cuts this year, marking an increase compared to previous years. This trend is likely to continue, especially after Selena Gomez recently stunned with her 4 carat marquise cut diamond from Benny Blanco, setting a new standard for elegance and style.
Platinum shines bright
White gold and platinum emerged as the top choices, with 38% of celebrities selecting one of these metals for their engagement ring bands. One such celebrity is Ellie Alderson, who got engaged to Ollie Watkins in July. The footballer proposed with a stunning 3-carat oval-cut diamond in a solitaire setting, perched on a sleek platinum band.
In second place was yellow gold, chosen by 35% of celebrities – including Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts, who received a stunning 1.5-carat oval-cut diamond engagement ring from Mitch Hahn. Dazzling in a solitaire setting, the diamond appears to be sat gracefully on a yellow gold band.
Surprisingly, pave bands came third this year, with 27% of celebrities opting for the versatile setting that accentuates the sparkle of your centre diamond. In September, Alexandra Burke stunned us with her 3.5 carat diamond engagement ring. Encircled by a halo of diamonds, the sizeable stones sparkle is accentuated further by a pave band.
The most popular month to propose
While the ring is undoubtedly important, we also looked into the most popular times of year for celebrity proposals. After analysing the dates, we can reveal that the months when celebrities are most likely to make their big announcement are July and September.
Overall, 38% of this year’s celebrity proposals took place in July or September. April ranked third, with 15% of celebrities choosing it as the month to pop the question.
According to our data, February proved to be the least popular month for celebrity proposals, with surprisingly no engagements taking place during that time. Despite the romantic associations of the month, it appears that stars preferred other months for making their big announcements.
Methodology: To gather this data, we analysed 26 celebrity engagement rings from January to December 2024. Our expert jewellers highlighted the cost, carat, stone, shape, and setting of each ring. We then used reputable news sources to gather information on the month and date of the proposals and analyse the most popular time to propose.
