As the night sky prepares to dazzle with the brilliance of the Perseid Meteor Shower on 12-13th August, it’s not just stargazers who are turning their eyes to the heavens – jewellery lovers are, too.
This annual celestial spectacle, known for its glittering trails of cosmic light, sets the perfect stage to celebrate another kind of stardust: cosmic gemstones. From meteorite-born Moldavite to moon-glowing Moonstone, these ethereal gems capture the beauty, mystery, and power of the universe – allowing you to wear a piece of the cosmos itself.
To mark the occasion, fine jewellery and diamond experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have spotlighted some of the most captivating cosmic stones – each with a story as rich and extraordinary as the night sky.

Moldavite
Moldavite is a rare, olive-green tektite formed from a meteorite impact millions of years ago, prized for its otherworldly appearance. It symbolises transformation, spiritual awakening, and protection, often believed to accelerate personal growth and connect wearers to cosmic energies.

While there are no widely documented instances of mainstream celebrities publicly wearing moldavite jewellery, the stone has gained popularity in recent years among spiritual influencers, crystal enthusiasts, and collectors.
Moonstone
Moonstone is a captivating gemstone known for its soft, milky sheen and unique play of light called adularescence. It symbolises intuition, new beginnings, and feminine energy, often believed to bring emotional balance and enhance spiritual growth.

Victoria Beckham: Victoria Beckham’s engagement ring collection contains some of the world’s finest precious gemstones and is worth an eyewatering amount of money. One of her rings features moonstone, set in a diamond encrusted platinum band. Due to the size and quality of the stone, our experts valued it at £30,000.
Queen Camilla: Queen Camilla wore a mysterious brooch earlier this year that nobody can pin point the origin of. It features diamonds surrounding a central blue cabochon gemstone, believed to be moonstone. The more transparent and bluer a moonstone is, the more valuable it becomes. Based on its design and the apparent quality of the gemstone, our experts estimate the brooch to be worth approximately £30,000.

Kate Middleton: While much of Kate Middleton’s jewellery collection is understandably out of reach – she is a Princess, after all – she’s no stranger to high street fashion. One of her go-to pieces is the Stella earrings from Carousel Jewels, a surprisingly affordable pair priced at just £130. Handcrafted and gold-plated, the earrings feature a striking blue lapis stone paired with the soft, ethereal glow of moonstone.

Labradorite
Labradorite is a stunning gemstone known for its iridescent play of colours, often flashing blues, greens, and golds in the light. It symbolises transformation, protection, and spiritual awakening, believed to enhance intuition and shield the wearer from negative energies.

Kirsten Dunst transformed her neckline into a work of art at the 2023 Baby2Baby Gala, layering Irene Neuwirth’s rainbow moonstone necklace between two striking labradorite strands.
Brie Larson is also a fan of the gemstone, wearing a one-of-a-kind bracelet featuring labradorite, iolite, rainbow moonstone, and aquamarine – a bespoke creation by her friend, designer Melinda Lee Holm.
Meanwhile, celebrated jewellery house Bijules – adored by stars such as Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, and Rihanna – incorporates exquisite bullet-cut labradorite into its opulent fine jewellery collections.
Opal
Originating from a Tibetan culture that existed from the 7th to 9th centuries AD and differentiating itself from other gemstones with its unique rainbow hue, opal is the birthstone for April. Bringing the promise of better days and believed to possess moon energy that can boost intuition, opal symbolises truth, hope purity and energy.

Taylor Swift: At her 2023 birthday celebration, Taylor Swift dazzled wearing a stunning opal ring gifted by her close friend Keleigh Teller. Valued at approximately $20,000, the piece features a striking oversized white opal – estimated around 15 carats – encircled by a delicate halo of shimmering blue topaz stones.
The superstar was also spotted wearing a $2,250 Foundrae opal charm necklace during a New York City date night, a meaningful piece that features her partner Travis Kelce’s birthstone.

Jane Fonda: Jane Fonda’s 18-karat yellow gold engagement ring from Ted Turner featured an oval shaped black opal centre stone, flanked by two round-cut diamonds that totalled approximately 0.30 carats. In 2016, Jane auctioned off 800 personal items – including her wedding dress and engagement ring from Ted. It was estimated to sell for $2,000 to $4,000, but it went for $19,200 – almost five times its top estimate.

Princess Beatrice: Though she doesn’t usually wear much jewellery, Princess Beatrice made the exception at King Charles III’s coronation. The Princess opted for Garrard’s Blaze pink sapphire, rubellite and pink opal hoop earrings. The 18ct rose gold earrings feature 52 pink sapphires totaling 2.94 carats, 14 rubellites totaling 6.98 carats and eight pink opals totaling 2.95 carats. Introducing a new approach to a Garrard icon, they retail at £30,833.

Timothée Chalamet: To celebrate the release of ‘Wonka’, Timothée worked closely with Cartier to create a candy-inspired necklace that boasts a staggering 964 stones – including emeralds, rubellites, pink tourmalines and blue opals. It reportedly took 450 hours to make and this is certainly reflected in the price – our experts estimate it to be worth around $200,000.

Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli is a deep, vibrant blue gemstone prized since ancient times for its intense color and natural flecks of golden pyrite. It symbolises wisdom, truth, and spiritual power, often believed to inspire clarity, honesty, and inner strength.

While there’s little public record of celebrities wearing lapis lazuli as jewellery, some are known to keep the stone close in other ways. Robert Downey Jr., for example, not only carries crystals himself but has even enlisted a spiritual guru to bring his favourites to film sets. The actor has spoken about how crystals helped him heal from the toll of past substance abuse and credits their positive energy during his wife’s pregnancy, when he wore lapis lazuli and sodalite for their protective and balancing properties.
