Why are platinum rings more valuable than gold?

When it comes to choosing a metal for your engagement or wedding ring, platinum is typically a more expensive choice. The main reason for this is that precious metals are priced by weight, and platinum is much denser than gold, meaning it will be heavier.

Another reason why platinum rings are more valuable than gold is because the metal is much rarer. Every year, approximately 1,500 tonnes of gold is mined, in comparison to just 160 tonnes of platinum.

In terms of sheer purity, platinum rings are made of at least 90-95% platinum and this density makes the band much more durable than gold. In comparison, a 14k gold ring band is typically only 58.5% gold, and the price difference reflects the quantity of the rare metals needed.

Whilst many believe that platinum is the best metal for jewellery such as engagement and wedding rings, the truth is, when it comes to appearance, they are virtually identical.

Can you tell the difference between the two rings below?

Whilst platinum is more expensive, 14K and 18K white gold are durable enough for everyday wear, meaning platinum isn’t a must-have.

While platinum is typically stronger and more durable, it is still a softer metal than gold making it more vulnerable to scratches. The scratches along a platinum can give the jewellery an antique look, many customers love how this looks.

The everyday wear-and-tear isn’t just exclusive to platinum rings, jewellery made with white gold will slowly revert to its original yellow colour.

However, this shouldn’t deter you from using these metals as most jewellers will offer a free annual clean that will restore rings of any metal to their original natural beauty.

One of the main benefits that platinum holds over white gold is the absence of nickel, which some people may be allergic to. Some gold rings contain nickel, and unfortunately this can irritate the skin around the finger. If your partner does have an allergy, then it bay be best to choose a platinum ring to avoid any irritation.

Whether you decide to choose a white gold or platinum ring, they are both precious metals, meaning your ring will look beautiful either way.

How much more expensive is platinum compared to white gold?

While platinum and gold are similar in price by the gram, when it comes to a platinum ring, the density of the metal means that more is required to create it.

Primarily in Russia and South Africa, platinum is thirty times rarer than gold, not to mention four times as strong, which is one of the reasons it’s a little more expensive.

If you are looking to buy a wedding or engagement ring, platinum typically costs between two to four times as much as gold.
